About Tom + Chee

Tom + Chee is a Cincinnati restaurant brand whose menu centers on grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup, along with playful specialty items. It was founded by Trew Quackenbush and Corey Ward, who started out selling at a local event before opening restaurants. The founders appeared in the Season 4 finale, Episode 26. On camera, Barbara Corcoran and Mark Cuban jointly agreed to put in $600,000, taking 30% of the company between them. The terms changed after taping. Cincinnati Magazine reported that Cuban withdrew because of a disagreement over franchising, and that Corcoran later agreed to a far smaller stake. We have not confirmed the founders' original ask from a primary source, so it is not listed here. After the show, the brand grew quickly through franchising and opened many franchised locations. That growth proved hard to sustain. Local reporting describes financial problems, closed stores and the company's lender taking control of its assets. In 2017, GSR Brands, the parent of the regional Gold Star Chili chain, bought the Tom + Chee assets, so this page lists the brand as acquired. The Tom + Chee website is still online under that ownership, but we have not independently counted how many restaurants are open now. For Shark Tank followers, the story shows how a deal agreed on air can change a great deal once due diligence and the realities of franchising set in. The sale and the store counts at that time are covered in the update below.

Tom + Chee: where it stands after Shark Tank

Tom + Chee started as a tent at a Cincinnati festival and grew into a restaurant built around grilled cheese and tomato soup. Its best-known item was a grilled-cheese donut. Co-founders Trew Quackenbush and Corey Ward pitched in the season 4 finale, which aired May 17, 2013. Recaps by Mashed and The Daily Meal report their ask as $600,000 for 10%; we have not confirmed that figure from a primary source. They left with an on-air deal from Barbara Corcoran and Mark Cuban for $600,000 in exchange for 30%. The final deal was not what aired. Cincinnati Magazine reported that Cuban dropped out over a disagreement about franchising and that Corcoran 'eventually cut a smaller deal for 1 percent equity.' The chain expanded through franchising after the show. WCPO later reported that the company had financial problems and closed several locations, the Enquirer's timeline listed the closures, and QSR Magazine reported that its assets were seized by the lender. In September 2017, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that GSR Brands, the parent of Gold Star Chili, had bought Tom + Chee's assets from the company's lender. The chain had 23 franchised restaurants at the time of the sale, per the Enquirer. On October 14, 2026, tomandchee.com was live and showed a 2026 copyright. We did not independently confirm the current store count.
