About Coffee Joulies

Coffee Joulies were small metal capsules meant to be dropped into a hot drink. A material inside them was designed to absorb heat when coffee was too hot and release it slowly as the drink cooled, keeping it in a comfortable range for longer. The product was invented by Dave Petrillo and Dave Jackson, who started it in Pennington, New Jersey, and later manufactured it in Sherrill, New York. The two founders pitched in Season 4, Episode 13, asking for $150,000 in exchange for 5% of the company. Instead of buying equity, a group of four sharks (O'Leary, Greiner, Herjavec and John) offered a joint royalty deal, and the founders accepted on camera. The product had already drawn attention through crowdfunding before the show, and reviews were mixed on how well it worked in practice. The royalty arrangement most likely never closed. Secondary sources say it never went through, and a local newspaper reported that negotiations were still ongoing weeks after the episode aired. Neither the founders nor the sharks have publicly settled the question, as far as we can find. The company's online stores now show a notice that they are unavailable, and we have not yet checked state business records. So this page uses an unknown status, not closed, and we found no official place to buy the product today. The manufacturing history and the deal reporting are covered in the update below.

Coffee Joulies Shark Tank update: is it still in business?

Coffee Joulies were small stainless-steel capsules filled with a phase-change material. Drop them in hot coffee and, the makers said, they would absorb heat to bring it to a drinkable temperature and then release it slowly to keep it warm. Mechanical engineers Dave Petrillo and Dave Jackson built prototypes in a New Jersey basement, raised money on Kickstarter in 2011, and produced them in a former Oneida silverware factory in Sherrill, New York, according to Wikipedia. In the Season 4 episode that aired January 11, 2013, they asked for $150,000 for 5%. Four sharks (Kevin O'Leary, Lori Greiner, Robert Herjavec and Daymond John) teamed up on a royalty offer instead of equity, and the founders accepted on air, as the Utica Observer-Dispatch reported the next day. The deal does not appear to have closed. Mashed and Tasting Table both report it never went through, and the Observer-Dispatch reported weeks after the episode that negotiations were still ongoing. We have not found a statement from the founders or sharks confirming the outcome. Is Coffee Joulies still in business? It does not appear to be active. As of October 14, 2026, both joulies.com and coffeejoulies.com show a "store unavailable" page. We have not yet checked a state business registry, so we are listing the status as unknown rather than closed.
